How to Improve Typing Speed (WPM) and Accuracy Together

Understand what WPM means, why accuracy comes before speed, and a routine that steadily raises typing speed.

What WPM means

WPM is words per minute, usually calculated by treating five characters as one word. So even with the same number of characters, spending time fixing typos lowers your WPM. Speed and accuracy are linked.

Why accuracy comes first

Many typos mean more time deleting and retyping, which slows your overall speed. It is more efficient to build accurate habits first, even if slightly slower, then raise speed once accuracy is stable.

A practice routine

Keep your fingers on the home row, read one or two words ahead, and rotate the 30, 60, and 120 second modes. Typing varied passages instead of repeating the same one improves real typing ability more evenly.
